Moxy is a trendy boutique brand under Marriott International. The hotel is absolutely packed with Instagram-worthy spots and is so stylish it practically oozes coolness! Seeing all the gorgeous photos online definitely gave us the urge to check it out immediately. However, if you check in expecting a standard Marriott hotel experience, you might find a gap between your expectations and reality~ Why do we say that? Let's dive into our honest review of Moxy Taichung!

Location & Transport

🚄 High-Speed Rail (HSR): Take the Taichung MRT from "HSR Taichung Station" to "Feng-le Park Station" in just about 10 minutes.
🚇 MRT: Located just 100 meters from Taichung MRT "Feng-le Park Station," about a 1-minute walk.
🚘 Driving: Free parking is available for guests in basements B2 and B3, but the ramp is quite narrow and will test your driving skills! If the hotel's parking lot is full, be prepared to park at an affiliated parking lot that isn't exactly close by. You can find the affiliated parking lot using the hotel's Google Maps link. See the map below for details:

Information from Moxy Taichung

Moxy Hotel is incredibly convenient to reach by public transport if you arrive in Taichung via HSR, since it's just steps away from MRT Feng-le Park Station! However, since the MRT currently doesn't directly reach many of Taichung's famous tourist spots—like Fengjia Night Market, Rainbow Village, Maple Garden, National Taichung Theater, and Yizhong Street—we highly recommend driving, renting a car, or taking buses and taxis if you plan to visit these areas during your Taichung trip.

Even before stepping inside Moxy, the photo ops begin! The entrance features an art installation of a "spilled boba tea." We still remember when a large boba in Taichung was only 15 NTD when we were kids 🤩🤩🤩

The Lobby

Walking into Moxy Taichung feels like stepping into a massive, American industrial-style social lounge.

The walls are decorated with vintage Taiwanese accents, like classic Vitali soda ads and retro Tatung baby figurines~

The sofas in the lobby surround a fireplace, giving the space a super cozy vibe.

The check-in counter is essentially an extension of the lobby bar. With a neon "check in" sign glowing on the wall, it literally feels like you're checking in at a bar—very different from your typical hotel!

At check-in, you get a choice of an alcoholic or non-alcoholic welcome drink. We went with the non-alcoholic version.

There are so many great photo spots in the lobby. This bathtub ball pit by the front door is a major favorite for Instagrammers!

The lobby blends seamlessly with the bar in the back, offering a variety of seating areas. Complete with a pool table and an air hockey table, it provides a very open, comfortable social space for travelers.

They even provide various board games to play in the lobby~

Because the rooftop bar is closed on Sundays and Mondays, the first-floor bar also doesn't serve food on those days. So, if you're staying on a Sunday or Monday, keep in mind that other than some snacks and instant noodles from the retail area, the hotel "doesn't provide any hot food service."

To grab a meal, your closest option is the "Showtime Live" mall right across the street. If you didn't drive, you can also take the MRT to "Shui-an Temple Station," which has plenty of restaurants nearby. If you want to check out a night market, you can take the MRT to "Jiushe Station" and walk about 3 minutes to the "Zongzhan Night Market."

As a Category 2 Marriott property, Moxy Taichung does not have an Executive Lounge, nor does it provide complimentary Happy Hour food or drinks for Platinum members and above. Instead, Moxy's Happy Hour offers discounted drink prices at the first-floor lobby bar during specific times.

The first-floor lobby only gets more beautiful as the night goes on! When darkness falls and the neon lights turn on, the atmosphere is even more stunning and vibrant than during the day. It really makes you want to sit down and soak in the stylish yet warm vibe.

Heading up the stairs, there's another, more private and cozy area to relax in.

Hot pink lights project onto the floor, pointing the way to the elevators.

The first-floor elevator lobby is incredibly unique! Not only are the floors indicated by hot pink neon lights, but the massive LED screen built into the ceiling features a bikini-clad girl happily waving at you while swimming. If you don't look closely, you might actually think there's a transparent swimming pool upstairs! 🤣

And the fun doesn't stop there—the inside of the elevators is also super quirky. The three elevators have different funhouse mirrors installed: one makes you look tall and thin, another makes you look short and chubby, and the last one is a regular mirror~ It makes pressing the elevator button a little game of anticipation, wondering which mirror you'll get this time!

Arriving at our floor! The 15th-floor elevator lobby features brick walls paired with a dinosaur emblem, giving off a slight sense of mystery.

The room numbers are decorated with wood panels and highlighted by a spotlight. Up until this point, our impression of Moxy was pretty much flawless~

Superior Room Tour

When we originally booked through the Marriott website, we reserved a one-bed "Standard" room. However, thanks to Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status, we were upgraded to a one-bed "Superior" room at check-in. Both room types are also available with two single beds, perfect for friends traveling together. Besides these two, the hotel also offers a larger "Deluxe" room. All single-bed rooms come with a Queen-size bed.

Before opening the door to a Moxy hotel room, you need to mentally prepare yourself! Moxy's brand concept focuses on rooms that are "small" but "highly functional," paired with ultra-stylish and strongly designed public areas and bars. The main goal is to encourage guests to hang out and socialize in the public spaces rather than lounging lazily in their rooms~

Even so, the Moxy room is much smaller than we imagined. There aren't many hotels where you can capture the entire room in just one photo 😂😂😂 Items you'd almost certainly find in a typical Marriott brand hotel—like a closet, luggage rack, mini bar (like a kettle), safe, bathrobes, iron, and ironing board—are genuinely nowhere to be found in the Moxy room. It strictly adheres to a minimalist design philosophy.

The only places to sit in the room are a chair next to the bed and a folding chair hanging on the wall. From our experience, neither of these chairs is suitable for sitting for long periods. Because Kevin had to work at night, when he had video meetings, my only living space was on the bed or the other chair, watching TV on mute. After a few hours, we have to admit that both the bed and the chairs are more about looks than function—they really aren't that comfortable. Especially for a pregnant woman, it was truly a struggle of neither sitting nor standing being comfortable. After spending our "babymoon" staying at 7 different hotels across Taipei, Yilan, and Taoyuan, we had never experienced anything quite this brutal~

Although the comfort level leaves room for improvement, the functionality and design of the room are still quite good. Since there's no closet, the wall is instead equipped with lots of pegs for hanging clothes and bags. The room's small table and chair are all stored on the wall, meant to be taken down only when needed. The room's design leans towards a cozy, IKEA-style Nordic minimalism, using lots of light wood elements to convey a warm feeling.

The retro telephone by the bed is super cute—word is, it's a standard design across all Moxy hotels globally. Nowadays, you probably have to be of a certain age to have actually used a rotary phone! Although the design is retro, you actually just push buttons when you want to make a call. We initially thought the room didn't have a fridge, but later realized that the square drawer on the left ☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻 is actually a mini-fridge!

The room doesn't provide bottled water, but it does come with two sanitized glass bottles. If you want water, you can head to the shared pantry/ironing room on your floor, which offers both ice water and chilled sparkling water. If you need hot water, you can borrow a kettle from the first-floor front desk~ It's a bit of a hassle, but the eco-friendly concept is great!

The shared pantry/ironing room even features a handsome guy in a hot pink bathrobe to keep you company while you iron. Again, just one word: trendy!

While we understand Moxy's brand concept, we still want to remind travelers planning to stay here: absolutely do not bring too much luggage or large suitcases, because… there really is nowhere to put them. Fortunately, the two of us packed light with just one small carry-on suitcase, which fit perfectly on the luggage rack provided in the room~

The biggest highlight of the room is probably the large floor-to-ceiling window offering a beautiful view of Taichung city. Our room happened to face the Feng-le Park MRT station. The expansive view definitely improved the visual sense of space in the room. The night view was also quite stunning, so much so that Kevin didn't even want to close the curtains at night!

As for the bathroom, it continues the hotel's industrial design style~

The black showerhead looks great, and they also provide a bidet toilet, which is almost a hotel standard these days.

The black-and-white bathroom uses hot pink shampoo, body wash, and conditioner bottles as accent colors. Very cute~

The hairdryer brand also strays from the usual Panasonic or Philips found in most hotels; they use Tescom, which works quite well! The hot pink hairdryer doesn't need to be stored in a special bag—its black and hot pink body matches the bathroom colors perfectly. Just hung on the wall, it looks like an extra decorative piece. No aesthetic clash at all!

The indoor slippers are black, which Cherry had never seen in any other hotel, but supposedly this is a standardized global Moxy item~

The only amenities provided in the Moxy room are toothbrushes and toothpaste. If you need anything else, you can grab it yourself from the first-floor front desk. While a bit unusual, it didn't affect us much since we usually bring our own toiletries and rarely use hotel amenities. Even though toothbrushes are the only basic amenity, the fact that one is black and one is hot pink actually pleasantly surprised Cherry! When we previously stayed at W Taipei, we thought the green and red themed bathroom would provide one red and one green toothbrush, but they didn't. We didn't expect Moxy to actually follow through with dual-colored toothbrushes!

The lid on the mouthwash cup even says "Bottoms UP!"—talk about being ready to party! 😂

The shower drain cover says "Deep End." It's these little details that show Moxy, much like W Hotel, is full of playful character and super fun~

Honestly speaking, the bed in the room is really small, and sleeping on it felt very average. Because Cherry had a big pregnant belly and was finding it hard to sleep, she habitually asked the hotel for an extra memory foam or latex pillow, only to be surprised that Moxy didn't have any at all. Naively thinking memory foam or latex pillows were hotel standards, Cherry realized she had been totally spoiled by other Marriott properties… We have to say, Moxy is truly a hotel for trendy guys and girls to take photos, party, and socialize. For a pregnant woman who values sleeping comfort, it's best to avoid staying here. After one night, Kevin initially wanted to book another night to hit his Marriott Titanium status, but Cherry immediately vetoed it. Aching all over, I really just missed my bed at home! 😂

We still have to mention the pros of the Moxy room: the LG LCD TV is awesome. It connects directly to YouTube, supports both iOS and Android screen casting, and very generously offers all movies for free! It's perfect for those who love lounging in bed to binge-watch shows!

Hotel Breakfast

Hotel breakfast is served at the first-floor bar.

Perhaps because Moxy Taichung had just opened at the end of 2020, their breakfast ordering system still felt a bit chaotic during our stay (Info as of April 2021). Simply put, there are two main breakfast options:

  1. One main course including an all-you-can-eat salad bar ($418/person)
  2. Main course only, no salad bar ($300/person)

Marriott Platinum members and above receive "one" token at check-in that can be redeemed for a "main course + salad bar," plus a daily 300 NTD breakfast credit (deducted at checkout), regardless of how many nights they stay.

Therefore, if two people check in, on the first day you can use the token plus the 300 NTD credit, allowing both people to eat a main course breakfast (without the salad bar) for free~ For every day after that, you only get the 300 NTD discount credit. The 300 NTD credit means you can enjoy one main course for free; if you want the salad bar, you pay the 118 NTD difference. If two people want to eat breakfast at the hotel from the second day onward, the second person has to pay full price out of pocket.

The photo above shows the main courses we ordered on our first morning: Chinese-style fried eggs with lion's head meatballs and Western-style sausage with waffles. Honestly, the flavors were pretty mediocre. If forced to choose, Cherry preferred the Western style—at least the waffles tasted decent.

Additionally, there was a minor hiccup with breakfast. On the first day, they didn't ask us how we wanted the fried eggs for the Chinese meal and just served them over-easy. We later asked them to cook the eggs fully. On the second day, the staff specifically asked how we wanted our eggs when we ordered. We were thrilled, thinking their service had immediately improved, but when the food arrived, the eggs were still over-easy, and we had to ask the kitchen to recook them. The exact same issue happened two days in a row, which leads us to believe Moxy has room for improvement in staff training and communication.

As for the salad bar, the selection is genuinely very sparse compared to other hotels. It only offers hot soy milk, salad, fruit, coffee, and tea.

On our second morning, we didn't pay extra for the salad bar and just ordered a Chinese-style congee. Because the salad bar options were so limited and the main course flavors were just okay, spending over 400 NTD for one person's breakfast felt like really low value for money. We eventually just gave up and drove out to eat McDonald's breakfast. To force us—who are usually too lazy to step out of the hotel—to go out for McDonald's, Moxy Taichung probably ranks near the bottom for breakfast selection and quality among all the Marriott properties Cherry has stayed at… But since the hotel is still fairly new, we believe there are plenty of opportunities for improvement, and we look forward to seeing Moxy Taichung put more effort into their breakfast in the future! (Info as of April 2021)

Hotel Facilities

Besides the first-floor lobby, Moxy Taichung's other facilities—including the gym, lockers, and self-service laundry—are all concentrated on the 2nd floor~

The hallway on the 2nd floor features an entire wall of Taiwanese-style graffiti that is great for photos. For some reason, arriving on the 2nd floor made me feel like I was walking into a university dorm in New York!

Gym

While the Moxy rooms are on the smaller side, the public areas are quite spacious. The gym is not only incredibly stylish but also offers a wide variety of equipment~

In addition to basic treadmills and stair climbers, they even have equipment rarely seen in hotel gyms, like punching bags and gymnastics rings!

Out the window, you can see the newly operational Taichung MRT and the Showtime Live mall across the street.

Lockers & Self-Service Laundry

Right next to the gym are the lockers and the self-service laundry area, with high tables and chairs in the middle for resting or chatting with others~

The locker doors are covered in various graffiti and feature vintage combination locks—it really gives off major college campus vibes!

The coin-operated washing machines and dryers cost 50 NTD per use~

Basement Parking Elevator Lobby

To sum up our thoughts on staying at Moxy Taichung: unless you're a hardcore clubber who can't live without a drink, or an Instagrammer who can take photos all day long, it's really hard to spend too much time inside the hotel. The rooms are small and the design is trendy, but neither the bed nor the chairs in the room prioritize comfort. After staying once, Cherry felt it didn't really seem like a hotel—it felt more like living in a New York college dorm! 😂 You have to go to the pantry to get your own water, there are paid self-service laundry machines, essential student-life lockers, and the graffiti wall in the 2nd-floor public area really screams campus life~

On the plus side, the public spaces are large, stylishly designed, comfortable, and absolutely fantastic for taking pictures! The first-floor lobby also has interactive games to play, making it great for socializing! Cherry would genuinely recommend this highly unique and fashionable Moxy hotel to "solo travelers visiting Taichung for a 2-3 day trip, or Instagrammers who love taking photos and checking in."

After all, this is the only Moxy hotel in Taiwan, so if you haven't stayed at one and want to experience just how trendy Moxy's design is, we highly recommend trying it out at least once. "However," if you're on a family trip, hold high-tier Marriott status, or are used to standard Marriott properties, you must manage your expectations. Do not judge this Moxy hotel by standard Marriott criteria, or you will definitely feel a gap between expectations and reality!

For accommodation choices in Taichung, if you're looking for a similarly priced Category 2 Marriott property with solid service, standard facilities, and a super delicious breakfast, Fairfield by Marriott Taichung might be a much better fit for you!
