This was our very first time staying at a JW Marriott brand hotel, our first time redeeming a 7-night stay using a Marriott Travel Package, and our first time visiting Phu Quoc, Vietnam! With so many "firsts," exactly what kind of room was waiting for us?

This JW Marriott in Phu Quoc was conceptually designed and built as a university. Not only does it have a lobby set inside a library, a Department of Chemistry bar, and a Department of Architecture restaurant, but most importantly, the guest wings are divided into various academic departments. These include the Department of Zoology, the Department of Ornithology, and more, with each department featuring its own unique design theme. For more details on these wildly creative college vibes, check out our extended read: [This Isn't a Hotel! It's a European-Style University! | JW Marriott Phu Quoc Resort Tour].

Without further ado, the room we stayed in was the Emerald Bay Front King, located in the "university's" Department of Fine Arts! Let's take a look at what a room in the Fine Arts wing looks like!

🎨 Department of Fine Arts

The yellow-and-white European-style building in the photo below is the Department of Fine Arts.

Walking down the corridors of the Fine Arts building, we could see the beautiful Vietnamese-style tiled roofs of the neighboring villas right in front of our room~

Since it's the Fine Arts department, various styles of paintings are hung everywhere. The long row of arches along the corridor paired with gorgeous patterned tiles almost gives you the illusion of wandering through a European castle.

🎨 Room Tour

Here is our room~

Inside, there’s a large suspended TV with a European-style sofa right underneath it. Cherry, who was suffering from massive jet lag, tested it out the moment we arrived—it's super comfortable for a nap 😆! Since we were in the Fine Arts department, it made total sense that our room was decorated with abstract paintings. However, Cherry, who easily gets scared, found those abstract paintings a bit spooky when getting up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night 😅😅😅…

The bright red double doors paired with oversized lanterns give the entryway a somewhat Chinese-inspired vibe (or perhaps more accurately, Vietnamese style?). We think the resort's designer, Bill Bensley, really likes using lanterns to bring out the Vietnamese atmosphere.

The main street of the hotel is also fully decorated with colorful lanterns.

The bathroom for this room type is absolutely M-A-S-S-I-V-E XD. It features huge, classic paneled French windows, and right outside the windows is a stunning light well—such a unique design~

The shower area is so big you could literally twirl around in it.

Look, more lanterns!

The floors are also covered in patterned tiles. This resort is filled with all kinds of beautiful tiles everywhere you look—every little detail has been meticulously designed!!

Although the resort had only been completed for two years when we checked in, the backstory of this "Lamarck University" implies a long history. Because of this, some parts of the resort were intentionally built to look a bit weathered and aged! We can only say the designer was incredibly immersed in his role! We wonder if even he sometimes forgets whether Lamarck University actually existed or not?

🎨 Amenities

The bath amenities are not only from Aromatherapy Associates, a professional British aromatherapy brand, but they are also in super-sized bottles!!! This was our first time staying at a JW Marriott, and also our first time seeing a hotel provide such huuuuge bottles of amenities!

The vanity counter also came with plenty of hand towels.

The toilet and the shower are separated. The toilet is located next to the entrance hallway, and there are hand towels provided next to the sink there as well~ Wiping your hands with a fresh, dry towel after washing them feels absolutely amazing~

🎨 Ocean View Balcony

Since we arrived at our room at night, we were immediately mesmerized by the view outside when we woke up the next morning. Sitting right on the bed, we had a full view of the French windows and the unbeatable ocean scenery beyond them.

The balcony is quite spacious and features a huge outdoor lounger~

It's the perfect spot to just zone out all day long!

When the weather is nice, you can see a bit of a color gradient in the ocean waters outside~

From the balcony, we could look right down at the swimming pool and the beach below.

Every day, they consistently provided three pieces of fresh fruit along with a ton of bottled water. If we didn't finish the fruit and put it in the fridge, room service would replenish it with three more pieces when they came by.

To sum it up, we really have to give this hotel five stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Not only are all the little architectural details exquisitely done, but the hotel service is simply beyond words!!! Every staff member we met greeted us with a smile~ On one of the days, after Cherry went out for a full-day island tour, she came back and ran a fever of over 39 degrees Celsius (102°F) that night. I haven't had a fever since junior high (so we didn't even bring any fever medication)… I couldn't eat anything and kept getting the chills… it was absolutely miserable… Kevin called the front desk for help, and someone immediately brought rice porridge, a thermometer, and fever reducers to our room.

After taking the medication and getting some sleep, she felt so much better the next day.

During breakfast the next morning, several staff members even came over to our table to check in, asking if I was feeling any better and if we needed more medicine or anything else! It was truly so heartwarming!!!!

Even though our stay was booked using a Marriott Travel Package, everyone at the resort still made us feel completely at home~ Every day when we returned to our room, we were greeted by different towel animals. For the one below, Cherry and Fish had to debate for a bit before realizing it was a turtle 🐢! Could you tell?

We've left bedside tips at various hotels in many different countries, but this was our very first time receiving a thank-you card in return! On the second day, they even left two bamboo straws as a return gift~

On our last night before leaving, we even received a plush dog from the resort. She's wearing the exact same uniform as the Welcome Team!

The variety of room types at this resort is simply dazzling; this review is really just the tiniest tip of the iceberg. Aside from the different university department rooms, there are also many different types of Villas. If you're interested, you can check out a whole series of beautiful photos on their official website!

The room type we wanted to stay in the most was the Turquoise Suite. Unfortunately, our Marriott Bonvoy status wasn't high enough at the time of our stay, so we didn't get the chance to be upgraded. Maybe someday we'll have the chance to go back and try our luck again~

🎨 Marriott Bonvoy Member Booking

For those who have Marriott Bonvoy status or are planning to join, we highly recommend booking the JW Marriott Phu Quoc directly through the Marriott Official Website. This guarantees you'll enjoy all your member benefits and earn points. If you book through third-party sites, there's a very high chance you won't be able to enjoy your elite status perks during your stay!
