This. Is. Definitely. Not. A. Hotel! It's a European-style university! We guarantee this is exactly what everyone screams internally the moment they step into this resort. A lobby set inside a library, a bar themed like a chemistry lab, a restaurant masquerading as the Department of Architecture, and guest rooms sorted into the Departments of Zoology, Fine Arts, and more. This "most unique resort on earth" is none other than the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa! Without further ado, let's go explore together!

When we were initially looking for the perfect resort to redeem our Marriott Bonvoy travel package, we literally scoured through every Marriott resort in the world—and were instantly captivated by the unique design of this JW Marriott in Phu Quoc! To be honest, we actually had to Google where Phu Quoc was afterwards! This resort, which takes the French academic style to the absolute extreme, successfully brought Cherry and Fish to Vietnam—to a beautiful little island we had never even heard of before 👉🏻 Phu Quoc!

🌴 A University Resort

This is a resort built inside a "university." The grand entrance gate is incredibly imposing, and from the moment you walk in, you'll see "Université Lamarck" written in huge French lettering.

These two resting dogs represent the Phu Quoc Ridgeback—one of the rarest dog breeds in the world, native exclusively to this island. The JW Marriott Phu Quoc beautifully integrates this local feature by using this rare dog as their logo, so you'll spot them everywhere around the resort!

The resort is located in the southern part of Phu Quoc Island. Since public transportation on the island isn't super convenient, we took a taxi directly from the airport. Before even reaching the lobby, we passed by this stunning landscaping ☝🏻 right from the car window!

After stepping out of the taxi, the first thing we saw walking in was a massive trophy. Look closely at the floor—the mosaic tiles are shaped like Ridgeback dogs again! Next to it is the concierge desk decorated with a huge collection of dog bells, echoing the Ridgeback design theme perfectly. 🌴 The Library Lobby

Next, the reception staff led us to the lobby inside the "University Library" to process our check-in ~

It is absurdly beautiful! Aside from the dramatic high ceilings, all the library furnishings and displays are exquisitely detailed.

The books in the library are all real! Word has it that the designer painstakingly adjusted the arrangement of these books back and forth multiple times to get it just perfect.

This lobby is absolutely one of Cherry's personal favorite spots in the entire resort.

Once check-in was complete, a member of the welcome team took us on a tour to introduce the grounds. We rode on a standard golf cart, but the resort also has VIP-exclusive golf carts ready 👇🏻

There's a main street running through the resort, which is home to the Spa center and some charming little shops.

All the major resort activities—like lantern making, painting traditional conical hats, towel folding, cooking classes, and more—take place in specific shops along this main street.

🌴 Department Highlights

This "university" is divided into several different departments: the Department of Zoology, Ornithology, Agriculture, Anthropology, Architecture, Fine Arts… you name it! Each department features a unique style and different room types. The photo below shows the Department of Zoology.

And over here is the Department of Ornithology (Birds).

Every department has its own dedicated building, and every tiny detail within reflects the theme of that specific college. The picture below is the hallway of the Department of Ornithology.

Inside the elevators of different departments, you'll even find fun educational trivia related to that field! The one below is from the Department of Agriculture.

And right in the middle of the various departments is an absolute school essential—a track and field stadium!

Located in Vietnam, which has a French colonial history, all the buildings exude a strong, romantic French academic flair.

🌴 Chemistry Lab Bar

Have you ever drank a cocktail mixed with beakers and measuring cups in a chemistry lab? The most creative spot in the resort has to be this place right next to the beach, claiming the best ocean views 👉🏻 The Department of Chemistry Bar!

The entire bar is so fully committed to the role that even the staff are wearing white chemistry lab coats!

The bar is filled with test tubes, flasks, and all sorts of chemistry lab equipment. Every single piece of decor is perfectly on theme.

The bar is right on the beach, offering absolutely phenomenal views!

Not only is the bar itself surrounded by chemical elements, but even the restrooms haven't escaped the grasp of chemistry. Isn't this the exact periodic table that haunted my middle school nightmares?! 😵

Oh my goodness! The restroom inside is also a full-blown chemistry lab~

Looking at this crazy design, we can only say… if you have lingering trauma from your high school chemistry classes, this spot might not be for you! 😆 😆 😆

🌴 Resort Beach

Next up, we have to share some Insta-worthy photo spots revealed to us by the resort's professional photographer!

On the beach right in front of the Chemistry Bar, the area with the hanging hammocks is a super popular photo spot! You can capture the entire bay, the pristine white sand, and the European-style architecture of the resort all in one spectacular shot.

The beach within the resort is famously known as the whitest beach on Phu Quoc Island.

Just as the sky starts to light up at dawn, you can see lots of staff members out cleaning the beach.

Honestly, after being so thoroughly spoiled by this spotless beach, the public beaches we visited while touring the island just didn't compare (they had relatively more litter). Phu Quoc has many worthwhile attractions to see, but if your goal is just to play in the water and chill on the sand, staying at the hotel is definitely your best bet.

🌴 The University Story

From the moment we walked into the resort, a huge question lingered in our minds: Was this hotel actually renovated from the historic buildings of the ancient Lamarck University? Especially when walking through the hallway below, covered in vintage sports equipment and black-and-white graduation photos of university students, it feels so incredibly rich in history.

But when we finally asked, the answer blew our minds 👉🏻 Université Lamarck never existed! We just have to say, the resort's designer (the brilliant Bill Bensley) is an absolute genius. He pushed his imagination to the absolute limit, inventing a complete university backstory from scratch, and then flawlessly executing this collegiate theme across every single corner of the resort. The level of detail is literally mind-boggling!

Legend has it (according to local tradition) that if a sports team loses a game, they have to leave their jerseys and equipment at the winning school. And this corridor supposedly displays the items left behind by all the teams defeated by Lamarck University! It's a clever way to show that in the "story," this university had a powerhouse athletics program.

There are so many magical little details!! Even though you know perfectly well it's a fabricated story, you still find yourself constantly "confused" and wanting to believe that this university truly existed in real life. 😂

Besides God-tier replication of a university campus, the hotel offers so many different daily activities you can join. It genuinely gave us the wonderful illusion of going back to our college days and attending classes for a few days! 💖 💖 💖 We sincerely highly recommend the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa. If you ever have the chance, you absolutely must stay here! It's arguably the most unique accommodation experience ever!!!
