★ Flight time to Dubai?

Direct flights from Taipei to Dubai average 8 hours and 40 minutes, covering a distance of 6555km. From Hong Kong to Dubai, it's about 7 hours and 45 minutes. Since many flights heading to Europe transit through Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you can easily take advantage of the layover to explore an extra country! As for the best time to book your flights? You can refer to the average monthly flight prices on Kayak below. Flights from Taoyuan Airport to Dubai are typically cheapest in August, averaging NT$19,533. The most expensive months are November and January, averaging NT$34,679 and NT$29,056 respectively.

★ Dubai Visas

Hong Kong passport holders get a 30-day visa on arrival. Passports from popular immigration countries like the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK enjoy a 90-day visa on arrival (check the visa-exempt list here). If you qualify for a visa on arrival, there's no need to apply beforehand! Immigration officers at Dubai International Airport will simply stamp your passport with a tourist visa upon arrival. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months, and you might need to show a return/onward flight ticket and proof of accommodation.

Since Taiwan passport holders are not on the visa-exempt list, you must apply for a visa in advance. Be careful when searching for UAE visas online—some websites charge exorbitant fees or are straight-up scams that take your money without issuing a visa! For short stays (under 4 days), the safest route is applying for a transit visa directly through your airline, like the Etihad Airways Transit Visa or Emirates Airlines Transit Visa. There are two types of transit visas: 48-hour and 96-hour. Note that if you apply for a 48-hour visa, it cannot be extended to a 96-hour one later!

Transit Visa48 Hours96 Hours
Required DocsPassport (3 months validity) / Photo / Transit TicketPassport (6 months validity) / Photo / Transit Ticket
Application FeeFreeAED 50
Departure FeeAED 30AED 30

If you're staying longer than 96 hours, you'll need to apply for a standard tourist visa. The best and safest way is through the links on the official UAE government website. If you use other platforms, definitely read reviews to ensure you aren't scammed. For the latest info, always check the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) official website.

★ Time Difference and Voltage

◆ Time Difference: Abu Dhabi and Dubai are 4 hours behind Taiwan/Hong Kong.
◆ Voltage: 230V 50Hz
◆ Sockets: UK style / Type G 3-pin rectangular plugs

Source: Electrical safety first UK web site

ItemAbu Dhabi / DubaiHong KongTaiwan, US, Canada
Socket TypeType GType GType A
Standard Voltage230V220V110V

The UAE uses Type G sockets, which feature three rectangular pins arranged in a triangle—exactly the same as in Hong Kong. Although there's a slight voltage difference (230V vs 220V), modern electronics (which usually support 100V-240V) handle this easily, so you won't need a voltage converter. However, sockets and voltage in Taiwan, the US, and Canada are completely different, so you'll definitely need to pack a plug adapter and check if your devices are dual-voltage!

★ Weather and Best Time to Visit

Located right in the desert, Dubai is scorching hot in the summer ☀️, making it impossible to stay outdoors for long, so that's the low season. The absolute best time to visit Dubai is during the winter! Even though it's "winter," temperatures still hover around a very pleasant 15–20+ degrees Celsius (60s-80s Fahrenheit). Based on our experience visiting in December, we wore short sleeves during the day and even had a blast at the waterpark without feeling cold. It gets a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings, so packing a light jacket is perfect. Weather-wise, the most comfortable months are from November to March.

★ Ramadan

In Islam, Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar and differs from the Gregorian calendar, the exact dates for Ramadan shift every year. Since this is a deeply important religious period, public transport, food service, and attraction hours may be affected. Be sure to double-check when Ramadan falls before booking your flights and hotels!

YearRamadan Dates
2026Feb 17 – Mar 19
2027Feb 7 – Mar 8

★ Currency & Exchange Rates

Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi belong to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and use the same currency: the UAE Dirham (abbreviated as AED). You might also see unofficial abbreviations like DH or DHS. The exchange rate is roughly 1 USD : 3.67 AED (updated Dec 2024). Here’s a quick tip based on our actual money-changing experience 👉🏻 Hotel rates > Airport rates > Private exchange bureaus in malls. For every US dollar, here were the rates we got:

Exchange LocationUSD : AED
HotelUSD$1 : AED 3.47
AirportUSD$1 : AED 3.61
City ExchangeUSD$1 : AED 3.65

In summary, you get the best rate in the city/malls, followed by the airport, and the hotel is the most expensive! If you're worried, just exchange a little bit at the airport to get you started, and do the rest in the city or at a mall.

★ Are Credit Cards Widely Accepted? Do I Need Cash?

General hotels, shops, and attractions absolutely accept credit cards! Cash is mainly needed for the Old Dubai souks, the traditional Abra water taxis, optional activities during desert safaris, and tipping. We did encounter a few taxis that wouldn't take cards, but you can always just call an Uber in Dubai with no issues. How much cash to bring really depends on your needs, but for our 8-day trip, we only exchanged $200 USD and used cards for everything else. One important thing: very few places accept American Express (AMEX)! Even in the massive Dubai Mall, AMEX was rarely accepted. So, if you plan to pay with plastic, make sure you bring a VISA or MASTERCARD!

★ Is Tipping Customary in Dubai?

Here are the suggested tipping amounts for places in Dubai and Abu Dhabi where it's expected 👇🏻

Tipping ScenarioAmount
Hotel HousekeepingUSD$1 – 2 or AED 5 – 10
Hotel BellhopUSD$1 – 2 or AED 5 – 10
Restaurants10 – 15%
Taxi or Uber DriversAED 5 – 10 or just let them keep the change

★ What Should I Wear? Do I Need to Dress Conservatively?

Since Dubai is in the UAE, an Islamic country, we know many of you are probably wondering what to pack and whether you need to cover up completely. Actually, locals only make up about 10% of Dubai's population, with expats and tourists making up the remaining 90%. Because Dubai is so heavily focused on tourism, the dress code is much more relaxed than you might expect. When we first landed at the airport, Cherry was incredibly nervous because she noticed that no one was wearing skirts above the knee—she was genuinely worried she might get stopped by customs for wearing a slightly shorter skirt! 😆 But once we got into the city, we saw people wearing all kinds of outfits! If you're still worried, just avoid ultra-short shorts or skirts. However, during the summer, the sun is so intense that long sleeves and pants/maxi skirts are actually recommended just to protect your skin from the scorching heat! If you're heading to Abu Dhabi, keep in mind that it's a bit more conservative than Dubai. Try not to wear anything too revealing—especially at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which has a strict dress code. If your outfit doesn't meet the requirements, don't worry, you can rent traditional local attire right on site!

★ Other Important Tips

Many travelers love snapping photos of local life 📷, but you need to be extra careful in Dubai! Never take photos of local women without their explicit permission, as this is taken very seriously and could lead to severe consequences. Also, while you can take photos inside the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, overly intimate gestures or exaggerated poses are strictly forbidden. Always maintain a respectful and solemn demeanor while visiting.

Besides skiing, there are tons of other snowy activities: fly over the snow on the 16-meter-high "Snow Bullet" zipline, roll down the hills in a giant "Zorb Ball," ride toboggans, explore ice caves, and tackle climbing walls. It’s extremely kid-friendly! But the biggest highlight? The penguins! You can book a "Penguin Encounter" to get up close and personal with them, and don't miss the free daily "March of the Penguins"—watching them waddle across the snow is pure therapy. Since it’s inside the mall, grabbing food and shopping afterward is super convenient. If you want to escape the Dubai heat, go experience the extreme contrast of a -4°C winter wonderland!

Although the Expo is officially over, you can still visit "Expo City Dubai" to marvel at these structures. The crown jewel is definitely Al Wasl Plaza—a massive, 130-meter-wide, 67-meter-tall dome adorned with intricate Arabian patterns. From the outside, it looks like a giant, elegant Arabian lantern. But the magic happens at night when it becomes the world's largest 360-degree projection dome, displaying visuals both inside and out! ★ Abu Dhabi Day Trip

Even though this post is all about Dubai attractions, we just have to mention Abu Dhabi because it is only a 2-hour drive away and absolutely worth visiting! Step into an Islamic dream at the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, fulfill your childhood fantasies of Arabian royalty at the Qasr Al Watan (Presidential Palace), stay in the ultra-luxurious 22-ton gold-adorned Emirates Palace Hotel, admire the architectural masterpiece of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and ride the world's fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World! If you have the time, an Abu Dhabi day trip is highly, highly recommended. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with its 82 gleaming white domes, floral marble courtyard, and golden-accented archways, is a mandatory stop! For detailed Abu Dhabi info, check out 👉🏻 【Abu Dhabi Travel Guide】Top 15 Attractions ★ Map, Transport & Itinerary

📌 If you prefer not to plan the transport yourself, there are great day tours departing from Dubai, such as the Grand Mosque & Louvre Day Tour, or the Grand Mosque & Ferrari World Day Tour!

🇦🇪 Dubai Transport

If you plan to use public transport in Dubai, you need to know about the "nol card"! These rechargeable transport cards come in Red, Silver, and Gold. The Red card is good for up to 10 trips, making it okay for quick visits. The Silver card can be topped up indefinitely and is the most practical choice for tourists. The Gold card is essentially a VIP pass; fares are higher, but it grants access to exclusive Gold Class carriages. For everything you need to know about nol cards—fares, route maps, how to ride, top-ups, and refunds—check out 👉🏻 Quick Guide to Dubai Transport | nol card Metro & Bus Guide | Taxi & Uber Tips

If you're only in Dubai for a short time, we strongly recommend the Dubai Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus. Many metro stations aren't right next to the attractions, often requiring a 10-15 minute walk in the heat, or confusing transfers. If you only have 1-2 days, the Sightseeing Bus is the absolute best way to effortlessly hit multiple major spots without the hassle!

Abu Dhabi is only a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Dubai and is a brilliant addition to your itinerary (the Grand Mosque is mind-blowing!). You can even use your nol card to pay for the intercity bus! Just top it up in advance and tap on and off. 🇦🇪 Dubai Accommodation

As the Middle East's premier tourist destination, Dubai is actually a sprawling city! Many attractions look close on a map but are quite far apart. For example, traveling from Old Dubai in the north to Dubai Marina in the south is a 30-kilometer journey that can easily take 1 to 1.5 hours by metro. Taxis are faster (about 30 minutes if traffic is clear) and cost around $20 USD. Every district in Dubai offers different prices, locations, and hotel vibes. The three biggest factors when choosing where to stay are 👉🏻 Budget, desired attractions, and transport. The map below shows the rough geographical locations of Dubai's main districts~

Because there's so much to cover, we've dedicated an entire separate post to Dubai accommodations! It breaks down regional maps, nearby attractions, and the pros and cons of staying in each district.
