When you think of Tahiti, do you immediately picture Tiffany-blue oceans, charming overwater bungalows, crystal-clear water, and gorgeous coral reefs? Well… actually, those scenes are NOT in Tahiti 😱😱😱!? The official name of the country Tahiti belongs to is French Polynesia, and the well-known "Tahiti" is just its largest island. Tahiti itself is mostly where the local residents live and doesn't have many of those iconic tourist spots. When people say "Tahiti," they usually mean the other beautiful little islands of French Polynesia, with Bora Bora and Moorea being the most popular among travelers. (For this post, we'll stick to calling French Polynesia "Tahiti" since that's what most of us are used to!)

Moorea is incredibly accessible—just a 10-minute flight or a 30-minute ferry ride from the main island of Tahiti. Compared to other islands where domestic round-trip flights can easily cost you $300-$500 USD, Moorea can be reached by a quick ferry (about $23 USD per person). Plus, Moorea has plenty of affordable guesthouse options, making it the perfect "starter island" for budget-conscious travelers chasing their island dreams! In this post, we're sharing our top money-saving tips for exploring Tahiti. How did we spend 5 days and 4 nights in Moorea for under NT$20,000 and still have the absolute time of our lives? Let's dive in!~~~

🌴 9 Budget-Saving Tips

💰 1. Stay on Tahiti Island When Possible

When heading to Moorea, try to book an early morning ferry there and a late evening ferry back. Arranging your accommodation for the first and last nights on the main island of Tahiti (where there are plenty of cheaper options) can save you a good chunk of money. Location is key here! Taxis are notoriously expensive—a single short ride can easily cost $20-$25 USD! That's $50 USD just for a round trip 😱! So, if you're catching the ferry to Moorea the next day, try to find a place to stay within walking distance of the port. Tahiti doesn't have a ton of attractions, and most are concentrated around the port area anyway, so you can easily explore them on foot. Here are two highly-rated guesthouses near the Tahiti port for your reference. They are quite popular, so be sure to book in advance!

Hotel NameDistance to Ferry PortWalking TimeCheck Prices
HIME LODGE1 km13 minsCheck Prices
Fare D'hotes Tutehau1.4 km17 minsCheck Prices

💰 2. Plan Your Transport Carefully

As mentioned above, taxi fares are painfully high, so planning your transport is crucial. Take full advantage of free shuttle services offered by operators, such as complimentary transfers from Airbnb hosts (check our itinerary below for details). Make absolutely sure you factor transportation into your daily plans!

💰 3. You Don't Have to Stay in an Overwater Bungalow

Aside from large resorts, Moorea has some fantastic guesthouses ranging from a few dozen to a few hundred dollars a night. If your itinerary includes Bora Bora, we genuinely recommend saving your overwater bungalow budget for Bora Bora (Bora Bora Resort Info), because the dreaminess of the ocean there is on a whole other level! If your itinerary doesn't include Bora Bora but you're dying to experience an overwater bungalow, booking 1-2 nights on Tahiti or Moorea is a great compromise. Another thing to consider is how you balance your time between doing activities and staying at the resort. Overwater bungalows are incredibly expensive! When we stayed in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora, we basically never left the room so we could fully soak in that special experience. If you're going to be out running around on tours, a regular room is honestly more than enough!

The Moorea Airbnb we chose wasn't an overwater bungalow ☝🏻, but our window framed a hazy view of Tahiti island, overwater bungalows at the foot of the mountains, and a breathtaking lagoon under the blue sky and white clouds. Isn't that just as dreamy?

💰 4. Travel During the Off-Season

This probably goes without saying, but flights and accommodations are much cheaper during the off-season. Want to go during the off-season but worried about bad weather? For more details on peak vs. off-peak seasons and weather, check out 👉🏻 [Tahiti Travel Guide] Essential Trip Planning Info

💰 5. Experience Food Trucks and Local Cuisine

Compared to resort restaurants, local food trucks (roulottes) and small local eateries are significantly cheaper. It's a great opportunity to experience the local culture while saving a few bucks—killing two birds with one stone! The food trucks near the Tahiti port are especially famous. If you're in the area, you really have to give them a try!

💰 6. Stock Up on Groceries, Water, and Drinks at Supermarkets

There are many large supermarkets on Tahiti island that sell absolutely everything. French baguettes, in particular, are essentially a staple in French Polynesian Tahiti—they are incredibly delicious and super cheap! Just stuff them with some lettuce and your favorite fillings, and you've got a simple meal. Kevin and I could easily get two meals out of a single baguette 😆. There are supermarkets on Moorea too, but we wanted to maximize our time there exploring attractions. So, we chose to stock up on groceries at the Tahiti supermarket (the only downside: you have to carry it all to Moorea yourself!). This way, we could prepare our own meals on Moorea and save a lot on food. Also, according to our guesthouse host, tap water is drinkable in some parts of Moorea but not others. Because of this, we bought large bottles of water and drinks to portion out ourselves.

💰 7. Bring Your Own Snacks and Instant Noodles

If you're not used to eating baguettes, bringing your own snacks and instant noodles is another great trick! Most resorts should provide a kettle for boiling water. If you're staying in a guesthouse, just remember to check with your host beforehand to see if a kettle is available!

💰 8. Book Activity Combo Packages

If you're on an ultra-strict budget, you might skip paid activities altogether and opt for free hikes to viewpoints or bring your own gear for snorkeling—which is a totally valid way to travel! But if you have a bit of budget and want to do more, look for 2-in-1 combo packages. They are noticeably cheaper than booking activities separately. Take a look at the tours we joined to help you decide!

💰 9. Stay at a Guesthouse with Airport Transfers

For our final night, we stayed at a guesthouse right next to the airport for less than $40 USD per person per night!! The best part? The price included picking us up from the ferry terminal when we returned from Moorea (a taxi for that route alone would have been $25 USD) AND a free early-morning drop-off at the airport the next day. This price is an absolute steal; it's basically buying a taxi ride and getting a room for free! Of course, at this price point, the room isn't going to be as glamorous as a resort—it's more like a regular local home—but the sheets and room were spotless! If you want to save money, this is definitely the way to go!

🔔 April 2023 Update 🔔 Unfortunately, this guesthouse has also closed down. Below are some highly-rated alternatives near the airport. Most of these places still offer free or paid airport transfers—just be sure to confirm with the host after booking!
