Accessible by ferry, Moorea is undoubtedly the absolute best starter island for venturing into the dream paradise of Tahiti!! The entire island of Moorea is a dormant volcano, featuring beautiful lagoons, lush green volcanic mountain views, and bays formed by volcanic craters. Plus, there are so many must-visit attractions, tours, and must-eat foods you simply can't miss. We've compiled them all right here! (In no particular order)

🍍 Belvedere Lookout

The view from Belvedere Lookout is arguably the most classic and representative scenery of Moorea! Looking out from the viewpoint, the jagged 899-meter-high Mount Rotui stands tall right before your eyes. Its majestic, sharp peaks divide two calm, crystal-blue bays—Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay—both of which were once the bottoms of volcanic craters~

Isn't this view absolutely unique? You can actually drive up to Belvedere Lookout, making it a super easy spot to visit if you rent your own car!

🍍 Magic Mountain Lookout

One of the top two most famous lookouts in Moorea! From this mountain-top viewpoint, you can overlook the stunning lagoon surrounding the island. On a clear day, the sunlight hits the water, revealing multiple shades of radiant blue. The vibrant corals beneath the crystal-clear water are perfectly visible, along with scattered fishing boats and the distant overwater bungalows of luxury resorts. You can take it all in at once! This is absolutely the most beautiful ocean-view lookout on Moorea!

The road up here is extremely steep ➕ incredibly narrow, so you can't drive a regular rental car up. The most budget-friendly way is to hike, but due to Cherry's personal stamina limits 😆 we opted for the most relaxing method—riding up in an ATV (💸💸💸) to soak in the views.

🍍 ATV Island Tour

An ATV island tour is without a doubt the fastest way to dive deep into Moorea's inner wilderness!! Along the way, you'll cross rivers, traverse through the jungle, splash through streams, and marvel at valleys completely covered in lush green pineapple fields. You'll also get to admire Moorea's natural, jagged mountain peaks from entirely different angles. Best of all, some ATV tours actually include the two major must-visit lookouts mentioned above! If you can only pick one activity on Moorea, we highly recommend an ATV tour! (Cherry's tip: Check the itinerary carefully before booking, as many of the shorter ATV tours only visit one of the lookouts!)

🍍 Swimming with Sharks

Swimming with sharks is one of Tahiti's signature activities! You can do this on many of the islands, and Cherry even joked that your chances of seeing a shark in Tahiti are higher than seeing a stray dog 😆 The feeling of standing in the shallows with so many sharks happily swimming all around you is just so surreal~~~ Shark viewing is often included in package tours, so you can just pick your favorite combo!

🍍 Seeing/Touching Stingrays

Begging for food like cute little puppies and "flying" gracefully through the water, the stingrays here are absolutely adorable!! Just like the sharks, they are massive superstars in Tahiti!!! Visiting these ultra-cute stingrays is naturally a must-do in Moorea~ Many stingray encounters are combined with shark tours, so keep an eye out for that when booking your activities!

🍍 Snorkeling

Colorful tropical fish darting all around make the underwater corals look even more spectacular~ When visiting Tahiti, famous for its magnificent lagoons, how could you not dive into this beautiful underwater world? Many of Moorea's tours include snorkeling breaks, but there are also dedicated snorkeling excursions, so you can plan according to your own preference!

🍍 Jet Skiing

Riding a jet ski isn't just about the thrill of speeding across crystal-clear waters and carving waves through the beautiful lagoon~ The tour we chose also included dolphin watching, snorkeling, touching stingrays, and seeing sharks. It was basically experiencing every single must-do Moorea water activity all in one go!! This is definitely one of the best value-for-money water activities in Moorea. If you aren't planning to do water sports on other islands, we highly, highly recommend going jet skiing here!

🍍 Eating Pineapples & Drinking Pineapple Juice

If pineapples are considered Moorea's second most famous local product, absolutely nothing would dare claim to be the first!!! The inland valleys are filled to the brim with pineapple plantations. The pineapples grown here are smaller than those in Taiwan, but they are insanely sweet!! You can find Moorea-grown pineapples 🍍 and Rotui pineapple juice in shops and supermarkets all over Tahiti. You absolutely have to buy some to eat and drink when you visit~~

🍍 Renting a Car for an Island Tour

The most freeing and leisurely way to explore Moorea is to rent a car and drive around the island yourself. See a beautiful public beach? Just pull over! Aside from the beaches, Moorea also has stunning mountain scenery, and the best part of having a car is that you get to decide exactly where you want to go! There are also plenty of resorts along the way where you can pop into their restaurants or cafes for a bite and a drink while enjoying the scenery. It's so incredibly relaxing! (Cherry's tip: If you didn't do an ATV tour or another excursion that visits the viewpoints, you absolutely cannot miss driving up to 👉🏻 Belvedere Lookout!)

🍍 Watching the Sunset

Dreamy tropical islands always offer the most beautiful sunsets~ The golden twilight reflecting off the palm trees on the beach is exceptionally stunning! The sky is painted in shades of orange and red, blending with a few scattered clouds to weave together the ultimate dream island sunset! When in Moorea, be sure to find a nice spot at dusk to watch the sunset and let the gorgeous evening glow put a perfect end to your day in paradise!

🍍 Experiencing Tahitian Food Trucks (Les Roulottes)

We mostly prepared our own meals on Moorea, and the one time we did go out to eat, we ended up at the Hilton resort 😆 In the end, we missed out on trying the local food trucks (les roulottes) or local snack shops. There are quite a few food trucks scattered around Moorea, which is a much more budget-friendly dining option compared to resort restaurants, and it's a great way to experience local culture!

The above is our top 11 list of must-visit spots ➕ must-do activities ➕ must-eat foods in Moorea~ Besides these, Moorea actually offers a dazzling array of other water activities, like stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking, and whale watching, but unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to fit them in.

One question that kept bothering Cherry before the trip was 👉🏻 How many days is ideal for a Moorea trip? I feel that if you are hopping over to other islands as well, planning 2-3 nights in Moorea should be just about right! (We actually stayed for two nights, but since we love a slow-paced travel style, we left feeling like we were missing just one more night). If you aren't visiting other islands, you can add a few extra days to enjoy more of the water activities you like, or factor in the days you plan to stay in an overwater bungalow!
