After spending way too much money💸 on Bora Bora, we decided to cut costs and spend one night in Tahiti before catching the ferry over to Moorea. After flying back into Papeete Airport from Bora Bora, we found a budget-friendly Airbnb just a 5-minute walk from the ferry terminal — which meant we could simply stroll over the next morning to catch the early boat to Moorea and skip yet another outrageously expensive taxi ride (budget mode: fully activated, calculators out)~~~

Since we had a very early ferry the next morning, we dropped off our luggage at the Airbnb, made a quick run to the supermarket for some snacks, and then headed out to scout the ferry terminal in advance (pictured above) — because the last thing we wanted was to get lost and miss our boat!

We happened to arrive right at golden hour, so we got to enjoy a gorgeous sunset view at the dock as a bonus~

Just a 5-minute walk from the dock is Place Vai'ete waterfront park, where the famous food trucks are set up in the plaza.

The park is lined with rows of gorgeous palm trees🌴 🌴 🌴 ~

The view of the sunset over the ocean from inside the park was absolutely breathtaking!!

And beyond the beautiful sunset, Tahiti's famous food trucks are right there in the plaza at Place Vai'ete waterfront park, operating from around 5:30–6:00 PM until 11:00 PM~~

We arrived before it got fully dark, and the crowd was still pretty light at that point~

The food trucks here offer cuisine from all over the world — pictured above is a Chinese food truck.

This Tuk Tuk stand also serves Asian cuisine.

And of course, there's authentic Tahitian food too!

Having done zero research beforehand, our foolproof food truck strategy was simple: first, decide what type of cuisine you're in the mood for, then scope out which truck has the longest line, and go with that one! Since we love trying local flavors, we ended up at a Tahitian food truck. Fair warning — the prices here aren't cheap, even by street food standards. Main dishes average around US$18 or more, though the portions are seriously generous!

You get to choose your own sides. We each ordered a local Tahitian fish dish as our main — one of us went with a healthy salad on the side, while the other went straight for the hearty fries. Balanced nutrition, we tell ourselves~

Massive portions, right?! We couldn't even finish the fries😆 If you don't have a huge appetite, you might want to consider sharing a plate between two people!

Once it got fully dark — around 6:30 to 7:00 PM — the crowd really started to pick up!

The food was pretty good overall — we liked it so much that when we came back from Moorea, we made a point of going again and tried a different Tahitian truck. It was solid too! But our crowd theory proved right~~~the first truck we chose, the busier one, really was tastier and the portions were a bit more generous!

Tahiti's unique food truck culture🚚 is something you simply have to experience — mingling with tourists from all over the world, soaking up the lively night market atmosphere of this romantic island paradise, with a gentle sea breeze drifting through the waterfront park!! With so many different cuisines to choose from, we'd highly recommend going around 6:30 PM when the crowd picks up, because the atmosphere (and somehow the food) just gets better when it's buzzing😆 Beyond the big food truck scene in downtown Papeete, you'll also find food trucks in Vaitape on Bora Bora and across Moorea — if you get the chance, don't miss out!!!!
