Unlike the neoclassical elegance of Helsinki Cathedral, the Uspenski Cathedral — nicknamed the "Red Church" — is a feast for the eyes from the moment you spot it. Inside and out, it's absolutely saturated with Russian character and drama. Perched on the hillside of the Katajanokka peninsula, it stands in quiet dialogue with Helsinki Cathedral less than a kilometer away across the harbor.

Uspenski Cathedral took six years to build, constructed between 1862 and 1868 during the period when Finland was still under Russian rule. Its vivid red brick exterior is made up of an astonishing 700,000 bricks. The design came from Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev — the same architect who worked on projects in St. Petersburg — though the cathedral was only completed after his death. The architecture is unmistakably Russian in character. The 13 gleaming golden onion domes crowning the roofline are a hallmark of Byzantine style with a distinctly Russian flavor, and each one carries symbolic weight: they represent Christ and his Twelve Apostles.

Step inside, and that Russian spirit doesn't let up. Where Helsinki Cathedral feels serene and restrained, Uspenski Cathedral goes full theatrical — the interior is rich, layered, and genuinely breathtaking.

The altar is the centerpiece of it all — an entire wall of tempera paintings depicting Jesus Christ and the Twelve Apostles, framed in gold. It's the kind of image you keep looking at, finding new details every time.

Above the altar, an enormous gold chandelier hangs from the ceiling — and if the altar itself wasn't already jaw-dropping enough, this takes it to another level entirely.

Look straight up, and you'll see the soaring dome above the altar covered in intricate Byzantine-style frescoes. This is the classic "pendentive" design: the triangular curved sections connecting four massive arches allow the circular dome to be constructed above them. Natural light pours in through tall windows around the drum of the dome, filling the space with a warm, ethereal glow.

Intricately carved soaring dome, vivid icon paintings, a massive glittering chandelier — all together, it creates one of those rare moments where you simply stand still and take it all in. We came out of Uspenski Cathedral genuinely surprised: the design is so different from most European churches we've visited. It's absolutely worth the stop.

When we visited, entry was free — but be aware that the church attracts around 500,000 visitors a year, and there's been talk of introducing an admission fee at some point. Note also that the cathedral is closed on Mondays and closes early on weekends at 3:00 PM. Plan accordingly!

With its dramatic exterior and dazzling interior, Uspenski Cathedral is just a 10-minute walk from Helsinki Cathedral — and very close to other top spots like the Market Square and the Old Market Hall. It's a genuinely unmissable stop on any Helsinki itinerary.
