Helsinki Cathedral is absolutely the number one, most iconic building in Helsinki, Finland—bar none. If you only have time for one attraction in Helsinki, it simply has to be this majestic "White Church." Set against a backdrop of blue skies and fluffy clouds, the contrast between the grand, pure white church and its massive green domes is incredibly eye-catching!

Unfortunately, we visited during the winter, so we didn't get that beautiful blue sky backdrop. However, standing tall and proud above Senate Square, Helsinki Cathedral is still incredibly grand and elegant.

Right in the center of Senate Square stands a statue of Russian Emperor Alexander II. It’s pretty fascinating when you think about it! How is it that the statue in Helsinki’s most important landmark square is of a Russian, not a Finn? It really shows how significant this Tsar was to Finland. Before gaining independence in 1917, Finland was under Russian rule for over a century. This statue commemorates Alexander II's reforms in 1863, which allowed Finns to form their own parliament. This granted them more autonomy and sparked an era of active legislation, marking a major milestone in Finland's political history.

To get inside Helsinki Cathedral, you have to climb a very long set of stairs. (Cherry's personal tip: The stairs were a bit icy and super slippery on the day we visited! If you're visiting in winter, please be really careful walking up!)

Completed in 1852, the cathedral features a gorgeous neoclassical design and is the oldest of Helsinki’s three major churches! (The top three are: Helsinki Cathedral, Uspenski Cathedral, and Temppeliaukio Rock Church). Once you make it up the steps, you get an amazing close-up view of the cathedral, completely lined with towering Corinthian columns and exquisite carvings along the edges.

Turn around, and you're rewarded with a sweeping view overlooking all of Senate Square.

Those little wooden cabins down in the square are remnants of the Helsinki Christmas Market that had just wrapped up. The market usually runs from December 6th to December 22nd, but sadly, we just missed it…

Every year before Christmas, Senate Square transforms into a festive market. Picture a dreamy white carousel with the fairytale-like white Helsinki Cathedral as a backdrop, surrounded by cozy Christmas stalls—it's absolutely magical! We actually spent our Christmas in London, UK, so we totally missed out on Helsinki’s Christmas Market 💔💔💔. But we still highly recommend adding it to your itinerary if you love the holidays!

Even though we didn't get to experience the Christmas Market, the holiday had just passed, so the paths leading to Helsinki Cathedral were still decked out in festive decorations. While they might not be as dazzlingly extravagant as the Christmas lights in London, these understated holiday touches were perfect. They didn't steal the spotlight from the cathedral; instead, they added an indescribable touch of elegance. Sure, we didn't have a vibrant blue sky, but adorned with green and gold Christmas lights that perfectly matched the cathedral's domes, Helsinki Cathedral radiated its own unique winter beauty!

The interior of Helsinki Cathedral is also completely free to visit, and it's open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Inside, you're surrounded by Corinthian columns, a towering vaulted ceiling, and several gorgeous golden chandeliers~

The golden main altar and pulpit look remarkably elegant against the church’s pristine white walls.

Turn around and you'll spot the impressive pipe organ tucked away right under the church dome—definitely a hidden gem feature of Helsinki Cathedral! With its striking green domes and unique exterior, combined with such an elegant interior, this is undoubtedly a must-visit spot in Helsinki.

Perched on a high platform at the top of those long stairs, its natural grandeur makes Helsinki Cathedral tower high above the surrounding buildings. You can spot its striking white walls and green domes from many different places across the city. Day or night, it quietly watches over Helsinki.

Doesn't Helsinki Cathedral look stunning when viewed from afar at Uspenski Cathedral (the "Red Church"), another one of the city's top three churches?
