Did you know Bali still has a secret beach?! Tucked away in a valley behind towering cliffs, this stunning coastline is framed by massive white limestone walls. In the past, only a treacherously steep, narrow path led down to the sand. It was so rugged that only local seaweed farmers and fishermen could make the trek, making it truly one of the most secluded spots on the island—hence the name "Secret Beach"!

Bali's secret beach revealed

Fast forward to 2012, and a brand-new road leading straight to the beach was finally opened. This road was literally carved right through the limestone cliffs! Driving down it is an absolute jaw-dropper—the winding views of the colossal white stone walls are simply spectacular.

Secret Beach

After winding your way through the towering, sheer rock formations, you turn a corner and—bam!—the magnificent ocean comes into view at the foot of the hill. You'll also spot the classic, giant "Pantai Pandawa" sign, the perfect proof-of-visit photo op!~

Continuing down the road, you are greeted by steep white cliffs on your left and the endless, glittering expanse of the deep blue sea on your right~

What really gives you that instant "Wow, I'm in Bali" feeling are the majestic white statues nestled inside carved-out caves along the cliff face. Every single one is draped in incredibly detailed, traditional Balinese attire~ ☺️

There are five white statues in total along the cliff. After a little digging, we learned that these statues represent the "Pandawa"—the five sons of Pandu from the great Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The five sons are 👉🏻 Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva. Placing the Pandawa statues inside these massive white rocks instantly infuses this little coastal village with a deeply mystical Balinese vibe. In fact, the beach next door was named right after these five statues, and that's how we got Pandawa Beach!

The culturally rich cliffside had already left us in awe, but as we made our way down to the shoreline, an even more breathtaking scene unfolded before our eyes. A pristine white sand beach stretching all the way to the edge of the cliffs, met by crystal-clear waters.

While we can't claim it's the whitest sand we've ever seen—there's a bit of seaweed washed up along the shore—and it doesn't have that powdery-soft texture (it’s definitely more of a coarse 'foot feel' 😆), the beach is completely spotless. Not a single piece of trash in sight. It is SO. INCREDIBLY. CLEAN! For a public beach, this is absolutely mind-blowing!

We visited in November, during Bali's rainy season, and ended up going to Pandawa Beach twice. Both times, there was hardly anyone around! Overall, it had an incredibly laid-back, lazy, and relaxing atmosphere~

It just feels like the perfect spot to completely unwind, splash in the water, and play in the sand!

When we got tired of playing, we took a leisurely stroll along the coastline and stumbled upon an entire little street setup right by the beach~

They had everything you could want—food, drinks, and little shops to browse!

A restaurant opened literally right on the beach!

Right outside the restaurant, there's a whole row of sun loungers and umbrellas. We heard you can rent them for a fee~

Look at that clean, white sand right in front of the loungers!

Along the way, there are some cute starfish and crab sculptures that make for pretty great photo ops~

Cherry completely let loose and had the time of her life!

All across Pandawa Beach, you can spot colorful paragliders drifting through the sky. Against the backdrop of the blue sky, fluffy clouds, towering cliffs, and sandy shores, it looks absolutely picturesque! The hill right next to the beach is Timbis Hill, a popular paragliding base just a few kilometers away. If you're feeling adventurous, you should definitely give it a try—getting a bird's-eye view of the ocean and cliffs from up there has to be a spectacularly unique experience!

To be perfectly honest, when Cherry was researching attractions online beforehand, she never even came across Pandawa Beach! We only discovered it because our hotel, the Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa, has a private beach club down here, and they run multiple free shuttle buses back and forth every day. That’s how we stumbled upon this hidden gem. We ended up loving this exotic, tucked-away coastal village so much that we made time to visit twice! Just a heads-up: this Roosterfish Beach Club is exclusive to Renaissance hotel guests and isn't open to the general public (as of Nov 2019). If you're curious about it, check out our related posts!

🚖 Transport Information

Since we took the hotel's shuttle bus down to Pandawa Beach, we didn't have to figure out the public transport. However, we did notice a lot of people riding these sightseeing shuttle buses along the cliff side (we aren't sure if they require a fee). There was a clear street sign next to it listing all the shuttle stops. It honestly looks pretty convenient!

Not only did it clearly list all the stops, but it also had handy photo icons in case you needed a visual!

Shuttle stops according to the sign:
1. Rooster Fish
2. Mercusuar
3. Wantilan
4. Stage Kecak
5. Jalur Bus Shuttle
6. Parkir Mobil
7. Patung Pandawa
8. Pura Batu Cupit

If you're planning to go, it might be worth doing a little research into these shuttles!

We’ve mentioned in our other Bali travel diaries that Grab and traditional taxis are monopolized by locals at most of the popular tourist spots in the Uluwatu area, so you can't always just hail a ride on a whim. But it seems like Pandawa Beach is an exception! There's literally a dedicated Grab pick-up and drop-off sign right by the side of the road~

One last quick tip: if you plan on driving yourself or taking a taxi, there's a toll booth right before you enter the beach area. They charge an entrance fee of 15,000 IDR per person!

Thanks to the new road, this "Secret Beach" may not be much of a secret anymore, but taking the trip down to this hidden cove behind the cliffs is totally worth it. You get to soak in Bali’s rich natural landscapes—the stunning ocean, dramatic cliffs, skies dotted with colorful paragliders—while also experiencing the deep religious and cultural heritage radiating from the statues in the cave walls. To us, this secret beach still feels like a magical "hidden gem." And hey, the fact that we went back for a second visit should tell you everything you need to know. It is highly recommended!
