The most famous statue in the United States, the Statue of Liberty, was a gift from France in 1886 to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence and symbolize the friendship between the two nations. Standing at about 93 meters (305 feet) tall, Lady Liberty holds a torch high in her right hand representing the light of freedom, while her left hand cradles a tablet inscribed with the date of American Independence: "July 4, 1776."~

Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the United States welcomed the largest wave of immigration in its history. Over 12 million immigrants crossed the Atlantic Ocean by ship from Europe to New York Harbor. As their vessels pulled into the harbor, the very first sight that greeted them was the Statue of Liberty standing tall on Liberty Island. Holding her torch aloft, she became a beacon of light and hope, symbolizing arrival in the "New World." Today, she stands as the ultimate icon of American freedom and hope, drawing over 4 million visitors annually and easily ranking as one of the most popular attractions in New York—and the entire country!
★ Liberty Island Landing Guide

The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, about a 30-minute ferry ride from Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan~ If you want to land on the island for an up-close look, the only way is to take the official Statue City Cruises ferry. You can board from either Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The ferry route not only takes you to Liberty Island, but also stops at Ellis Island, which houses the National Museum of Immigration. You can also catch gorgeous distant views of Lady Liberty and the Manhattan skyline from there! The ferry runs in a one-way loop: boats departing from Manhattan head to Liberty Island first, then take about 15 minutes to reach Ellis Island. If you depart from New Jersey, you'll visit Ellis Island first before heading to Liberty Island~

A quick tip: If you're boarding from Manhattan, we highly recommend sitting on the right side of the ferry! The boat will pass right by the Statue of Liberty on that side (like the photo above), making it much easier to snap those perfect shots~
| Ticket Type | Adult Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| General Admission | $25.50 | Round-trip ferry, access to Liberty Island & Statue of Liberty Museum + Ellis Island |
| Pedestal Reserve | $25.80 | General Admission + Access to the Pedestal interior |
| Crown Reserve | $25.80 | General Admission + Access to the Pedestal and Crown interiors |
If you decide to do the island landing, we highly recommend booking your tickets in advance on the official website. When you get to the pier area, you might encounter people dressed deliberately like ferry staff trying to sell you tickets—please DO NOT buy from them! Only buy from the official ticket counters if purchasing on-site to avoid getting scammed. Booking online beforehand saves you from waiting in long queues and protects you from ticket touts. Plus, some access tickets absolutely require advance booking! As shown above, there are three types of landing tickets. The General Admission ticket includes the round-trip ferry, access to both Liberty and Ellis Islands, entry to the Statue of Liberty Museum and the National Museum of Immigration, and even comes with an audio guide~

Beyond general admission, you can also opt for Pedestal or Crown tickets. The Pedestal Reserve ticket allows you to go inside the pedestal structure that Lady Liberty stands on, which is about 10 stories high! From the pedestal's observation deck, you get stunning, elevated views of the Lower Manhattan skyline, New York Harbor, and Ellis Island. Looking north, you can see the Hudson River and the distant Brooklyn Bridge~ The vantage point here is much better than at ground level, making it the perfect spot for panoramic photos. Compared to the steep and narrow stairs of the Crown section, the Pedestal is much easier to navigate and far more suitable for families traveling with children or seniors.

The Crown is the highest accessible point of the Statue of Liberty, and daily entry is extremely limited! To snag a Crown Reserve ticket, you have to book weeks or even months in advance on the official site. To reach the crown, you'll need to climb 162 narrow and steep steps (there are no elevators past the pedestal). Once up there, you get a close-up look at the intricate iron and steel framework supporting the statue—it really feels like an expedition inside a giant piece of history. Gazing out from the crown's windows feels like looking over New York from Lady Liberty's own perspective—a truly unique experience! However, keep in mind that Crown tickets are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable, and you must register the real names of everyone in your party when purchasing. There are also restrictions: visitors must be at least 42 inches (about 107 cm) tall. The climb is physically demanding and the space is tight, so it's not recommended if you suffer from claustrophobia or have mobility issues. Be sure to weigh these factors before booking!

Aside from the statue itself, Liberty Island is also home to the Statue of Liberty Museum. Inside, you can see the original torch up close, learn about the fascinating construction process of the statue, and watch immersive videos that take you through the interior while explaining the story and the noble ideals she represents~ Originally, this information was housed inside the pedestal, meaning only Pedestal ticket holders could see it. But since this new museum opened in 2019, anyone with a ferry ticket can explore it! We highly recommend taking the time to dive into the history and meaning behind this iconic monument.

If you didn't manage to get a ticket to go inside the statue, we highly recommend heading up to the rooftop terrace of the museum. The elevated view of the Manhattan skyline is much better than from the ground! Of course, if you did score a Pedestal or Crown ticket, your view from the statue itself will be even higher and more spectacular~

Taking a walk around Liberty Island for photos is an absolute must—the Manhattan skyline looks breathtaking from here!

And of course, getting some close-up shots of Lady Liberty is a given!

There's also a gift shop on the island. Naturally, almost everything is Statue of Liberty-themed—they even have maple syrup in glass bottles shaped like her! Even the door handles of the shop are shaped like her torch 🤣.

Once you've explored enough, head back to the pier and hop on the ferry to your next stop!

If you departed from Manhattan, your next stop after Liberty Island is Ellis Island~ The main attraction here is the National Museum of Immigration, which occupies the former main building of America's largest immigration station. Between 1892 and 1954, over 12 million immigrants were processed here! The museum beautifully displays old photographs, documents, luggage, and personal stories, bringing the early immigrant experience to life. The Registry Room (Great Hall) is the most iconic space in the building, featuring a stunning vaulted ceiling paved with light-colored tiles. It's surreal to stand there knowing how many hopeful people once lined up in that very room awaiting inspection. Aside from the museum, Ellis Island also offers beautiful distant views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline!
To sum it up: landing on the islands basically means you get to explore Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty Museum, PLUS Ellis Island and the Immigration Museum. If you want to go inside the Pedestal or Crown, advance booking is essential! A full island-landing itinerary like this will take about half a day. If your schedule is tight and you don't have that much time, you can absolutely opt for non-landing alternatives to see the statue. Cherry has put together a handy comparison table for you below!
| Location | Why We Recommend It | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Staten Island Ferry | Free 1-hour round trip, great for side-profile photos of Lady Liberty | When departing from Whitehall Terminal, stand on the right side on the way there, and left side on the way back |
| New York Landmarks Cruise | Unlocks views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and three famous Manhattan bridges all at once | Covers multiple NY landmarks in just 90 mins |
| One World Observatory | Spectacular, sweeping views of the entire harbor from high above | Further away from the statue |
| Battery Park Lookout | A great viewpoint right inside the park | You can check out the SeaGlass Carousel while you're there |
| Liberty State Park | See both the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline at the same time | Located in New Jersey |
★ Free Staten Island Ferry
This is the ultimate budget-friendly hack every traveler should know! You can ride the free Staten Island Ferry to cruise the harbor and see the Statue of Liberty. The round trip takes about an hour and offers a great side-profile view of the statue. The downside? You won't get as close as you would on the paid cruises or by landing on the island. Remember: when departing from Whitehall Terminal, stand on the right side of the boat; on your return trip, stand on the left!
★ New York Landmarks Cruise

The New York Landmarks Cruise allows you to effortlessly check off multiple iconic New York sights in just 90 minutes! You'll cruise past the Statue of Liberty (without landing), Ellis Island (without landing), and three famous Manhattan bridges, including the Brooklyn Bridge. Since this is a paid sightseeing cruise, the photo angles are significantly better than the free ferry (just look at the photo above!). Aside from Lady Liberty, checking out the Brooklyn Bridge from the water is a huge bonus. We like to think of it as "paying for time and convenience"—perfect for travelers with packed itineraries or those who just love a good scenic boat ride!
★ One World Observatory

Located in the One World Trade Center—the tallest building in the United States—One World Observatory is the highest observation deck in New York. From an astonishing height of over 380 meters (1,250 feet), the sweeping views of the harbor are simply breathtaking! You can gaze down at the rivers, Lower Manhattan, New York Harbor, Liberty Island, and Ellis Island~ Because of its downtown location near Liberty Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, it’s the best out of NYC's top five observation decks for getting a relatively close (though elevated) view of both the Statue of Liberty and the bridge.

★ Battery Park Lookout (Manhattan)
The Manhattan departure point for the Liberty Island ferry is located right inside Battery Park. What many people don't realize is that there's a free viewpoint right in the park—Battery Park Lookout! If you decide not to land on the island, you can swing by here for a quick glimpse of Lady Liberty. However, keep in mind that this lookout is still about 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) away from the statue. So, if you're aiming for close-up shots, taking a cruise or landing on the island remains your best bet~
★ Liberty State Park (New Jersey)
The New Jersey departure point for the island ferry is located in Liberty State Park. Facing New York Harbor, the park boasts a natural sightline framing both the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. Interestingly, it's actually closer to the statue than many lookout spots in Manhattan! The park features a lovely waterfront promenade, perfect for taking a stroll, snapping photos, and enjoying the harbor views. It's truly one of the best places in New Jersey to see Lady Liberty. If you're looking for a free, relaxing place to linger and take in the scenery, Liberty State Park is fantastic. But again, if you want that "super close-up, touching the pedestal, macro-shot" experience, hopping on a boat or landing on the island is definitely the way to go~
And there you have it—our complete guide to unlocking the Statue of Liberty, with both island-landing and non-landing options! Whichever way you choose to experience it, you're in New York—so don't pass up the chance to see Lady Liberty in all her glory!
