How could you visit London without seeing its most iconic, instantly recognizable landmark—the spectacular Tower Bridge!? Taking 8 years to complete and stretching 244 meters across the River Thames, it features two 65-meter-tall towers. It’s a fascinating bascule bridge, meaning it can actually lift its road to let large ships pass through! Because it's located right next to the even more historic Tower of London, it earned the name "Tower Bridge."

Before planning our London trip, we always connected the famous nursery rhyme with this iconic bridge. We completely thought the "London Bridge falling down" in the song was Tower Bridge! But as it turns out, the nursery rhyme is actually about 👉🏻 London Bridge, which is located about 0.8 kilometers upstream from Tower Bridge, not this stunning "Tower" Bridge!

Stepping onto Tower Bridge and seeing this classic piece of London architecture that has appeared in countless movies with our own eyes brought out an indescribable rush of emotion! Tower Bridge is even more majestic than we imagined. The people and cars on the road look so tiny in comparison.

A masterpiece of Victorian Neo-Gothic architecture, the bridge's exterior features stunningly intricate details crafted from granite and Portland stone.

Looking up, you'll see the high-level pedestrian walkways on the east and west sides. If you go inside for a tour, you can experience the incredible views of the River Thames from up high, and even walk across the glass floor in the middle to look down at the bustling traffic below!

Besides the bridge's own stunning architecture, the view from its pedestrian walkway is absolutely breathtaking, offering a clear sweep of both the North and South banks of the River Thames. On the South bank, you can spot the unique, bulbous glass shape of City Hall and the towering Shard.

On the other side, you're treated to the North bank scenery, highlighted by the magnificent Tower of London.

Even though we visited in winter, London totally surprised us! Shaking off its usual gloomy reputation, it treated us to beautiful blue skies and fluffy clouds.

Framed by the perfect blue sky and white clouds, Tower Bridge looked absolutely glorious.

The bascules (the two halves of the bridge) can be raised to an impressive 83 degrees to let river traffic pass. However, these days, there aren't as many large ships, so the bridge might not even open on some days. If you want to catch this rare and magical sight, be sure to check the lift times on the official Tower Bridge website in advance!

5 Must-Visit Attractions Near Tower Bridge

There are tons of fantastic attractions clustered right around Tower Bridge! You can check the map above to get a feel for the area. Let's dive into some of the best spots to explore nearby!

★ Tower of London

You can actually spot the Tower of London on the North Bank right from the bridge. Even though it's called a "Tower," it's actually a massive palace! Its full official name is "His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London." While it's nominally still a royal residence, no monarch has really lived there since the 17th century. Over the years, it has served as an armory, a treasury, a prison, and a safe haven.

The central keep, featuring four turrets, is known as the "White Tower"—named because it was originally painted entirely white when first built. We were especially struck by the White Tower! In fact, the Hilton hotel we stayed at had a massive gingerbread house shaped exactly like it right at the entrance, proving just how iconic the Tower of London truly is.
