The earliest origins of Borough Market trace back to the year 1014. It has seen relocations and many ups and downs over the centuries. In the 1970s, it even faced a survival crisis due to the rise of modern supermarkets… until it successfully reinvented itself in the 1990s by focusing on "artisan food." Today, Borough Market attracts diverse street food vendors from all over the globe, while also selling premium European produce like olive oils, cheeses, and truffles. Borough Market has truly cemented its place as London's premier culinary mecca.

Borough Market is actually quite large, mainly divided into the three main areas shown in the map above:
◆ Orange Area: Three Crown Square. This is the central spot right by the main entrance. You'll find plenty of fresh produce here, mostly from larger vendors.
◆ Green Area: Green Market. This section focuses on smaller, innovative, and specialty vendors.
◆ Pink Area: The Borough Market Kitchen. As the name suggests, this is where all the hot street food and ready-to-eat meals are located!
The purple areas indicate sit-down restaurants and retail shops. If you're looking for a specific vendor, you can check out the vendor lists for each area on the official website.

The main entrance to Borough Market is absolutely a favorite photo spot for visitors. You can capture the iconic market sign and the towering 95-story skyscraper, The Shard, in the exact same frame! Right next to the main entrance sits a gorgeous, eye-catching structure. Rumor has it that this ornate facade was originally part of another famous London spot, Covent Garden. It was dismantled and put into storage in the 1990s, and then reassembled here in Borough Market between 2003 and 2004.

As we walked into Borough Market, sunlight poured in naturally through the high transparent ceiling. Framed by striking green ironwork, the whole space felt incredibly tall and bright—leaving a deep impression on us from the very first glance! Because it’s such a famous attraction, and since we happened to visit right on Christmas Eve, the entire market was absolutely buzzing. It was packed to the brim with people, and we couldn't tell who were tourists and who were locals getting ready for the holidays. (Though we hear Borough Market is still mostly tourists 😆)

The market was decorated with beautiful Christmas wreaths, bringing out that festive holiday cheer!

With all sorts of unique little shops, stalls, restaurants, and boutiques, the market is a dazzling feast for the eyes. But despite the sheer number of vendors, everything feels remarkably neat and clean. Every single merchant, whether it's a permanent shop or a small pop-up stall, arranges their displays with incredible tidiness and a great sense of design.

The colorful fruits and vegetables at the produce stalls look incredibly fresh.

There are quite a few fresh meat and seafood vendors inside the market, but the stalls are incredibly clean and have zero unpleasant smells. The shop in the photo below even went the extra mile with a lovely wooden decor setup!

To keep up with the massive crowds, the larger vendors with fixed stalls almost always have several SUPER-SIZED pans cooking at once!

We've never seen such a gigantic pan of seafood paella before. So cool!

It turns out they absolutely need pans that big. We just took a quick stroll around the corner, and by the time we came back, half the pan was already gone!

There are also plenty of charming smaller stalls scattered throughout.

Beyond being a great place to eat and browse, Borough Market's architecture is worth admiring on its own. The current structure was built in 1851, making it nearly 170 years old. Walk into any random corner, and the mix of ancient brick walls with the market's signature green framework creates a stunningly beautiful industrial vibe.

Also, right next to Borough Market is Southwark Cathedral 👇🏻. This striking Gothic building is definitely worth a stop for a quick photo op as you pass by!

🍩 Must-Eat Foods at Borough Market
With hundreds of vendors in Borough Market, what should you actually eat? Below, Cherry has rounded up a few of the most highly-rated, fan-favorite Borough Market foods!
★ Bread Ahead Bakery & School (Doughnuts)

How could you come to Borough Market and not grab one of the most Instagram-famous doughnuts out there? "Bread Ahead Bakery" is famous for its bursting filled doughnuts. Every single bite oozes with generous, incredibly satisfying fillings! Between the incredible taste and their stunningly photogenic look, these are an absolute top choice for photos and foodies alike.

★ Scotchtails (Scotch Eggs)
The famous "Scotchtails" in Borough Market is a little stall specializing in Scotch eggs. They wrap a soft-boiled egg in seasoned pork sausage meat, then bread and fry it. Take a bite, and you'll hit the tender egg white, followed by the gooey yolk slowly oozing out. Paired with the crispy, savory outer layer of fried pork, the contrasting textures are simply out of this world! 👍🏻

★ Wright Brothers (Seafood)
If you're a seafood lover, Borough Market has you covered, too. "Wright Brothers" is a wholesale seafood merchant that prides itself on offering fresh oysters from their very own "oyster farm" at friendly prices. They reportedly have a huge variety of other seafood as well. Slurping fresh oysters while sipping on a little wine sounds like absolute perfection! (Unfortunately, since Cherry isn't a huge fan of oysters, we had to skip this one—we'll leave it up to you guys to experience it for yourselves!)
