The story of Musée Mécanique began in 1933 when Edward Galland Zelinsky, a man deeply fascinated by automatons, started collecting mechanical amusement devices and machines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His goal was to preserve these incredible games before they disappeared with the changing times.

At first, these machines were simply a private collection displayed to the public in a small shop in San Francisco. However, as time went by, the collection kept growing until it reached the magnificent museum scale we see today!

In 1972, Musée Mécanique moved to San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf and opened its doors to the public. It gradually became one of the city's most famous tourist spots, drawing crowds of visitors from all over the world to see and play. The arcade is currently located just a short walk past the iconic, must-photograph Fisherman's Wharf sign shown in the picture above!

Here's what the entrance looks like~

The sheer number of vintage arcade games housed inside Musée Mécanique is more than enough to justify calling it a full-blown museum, yet they are incredibly generous and offer free admission! Even more amazing is that unlike typical museum exhibits you aren't allowed to touch, every single machine here can actually be played. And the best part? Most of them only cost a super cheap 25 to 50 cents per play!

The museum's collection features all sorts of old-school arcade cabinets, coin-operated games, player pianos, fortune-telling machines, and more. Rumor has it they've been gathered from all corners of the globe!

There are also quite a few custom, non-mass-produced machines inside. For example, this carnival diorama machine was entirely handcrafted by a former carnival performer who had to retire due to an injury!

We spotted several different automatic pianos inside! Just pop in a coin, and they start playing beautiful melodies all on their own~

Besides the player pianos, we also found a super cool automatic violin machine. This one is quite a bit more expensive—it costs five dollars for a single performance! Plus, it's locked behind a glass door, which definitely gives it a really precious and exclusive vibe.

This machine looks like it analyzes the love lines on your palm—so quirky and fun!

This one is even wilder! Just sit in the chair, and it supposedly figures out what kind of lover you are. It's basically the Harry Potter Sorting Hat for romance 🤣~

However, we have to admit—if you came to this arcade alone at night, you'd probably be scared half to death! A lot of the machines feature some seriously creepy dolls 😅~

Musée Mécanique isn't just a nostalgia trip for adults; there are also tons of games that little kids absolutely love. It's incredibly family-friendly and the perfect spot for the whole family to explore together!

Since most of the machines here don't have the intense flashing lights and booming sound effects of modern games, the ambient noise level is much more pleasant and not nearly as deafening as today's typical arcades~

Both adults and kids can easily find fun games to play here. In fact, it quickly became our three-year-old son's absolute favorite spot in all of San Francisco!

As we mentioned earlier, most of the machines run on 25 to 50 cents. One important thing to note is that the change machines here only dispense quarters. Because of this, we highly recommend bringing smaller US dollar bills to exchange slowly, so you don't end up with a massive pile of coins you can't finish spending!

Musée Mécanique is a mechanical museum brimming with the charm of a bygone era. Not only do you get to admire these nostalgic machines, but you also get to drop in coins and experience them firsthand, making you feel like you've truly traveled back in time! With its incredibly generous pricing in a famously expensive city like San Francisco, you can easily entertain the whole family for hours with just $10 to $20. Only this museum could pull that off! For travelers interested in mechanical devices or vintage culture, it is an absolute must-visit. If you find yourself heading to Fisherman's Wharf while in San Francisco, definitely add this unique arcade to your itinerary and drop by for a look!
